Q) In a survey on holidays, 120 people were asked to state which type of transport they used on their last holiday. The following pie chart shows the result of the survey.

In a survey on holidays, 120 people were asked to state which type of transport they used on their last holiday.

Observe the pie chart and answer the following questions:
1 (i) If one person is selected at random, find the probability that he/she travelled by bus or ship.
1 (ii) 1 Which is most favourite mode of transport and how many people used it?
2 (iii) (a) A person is selected at random. If the probability that he did not use train is 4/5, find the number of people who used train.
OR (iii) (b) The probability that randomly selected person used aeroplane is 7/60. Find the revenue collected by air company at the rate of ₹5,000 per person. e lost card is a black card.

Ans: We have total 120 participants in the survey.

This becomes the total base for calculating the probability.

(i) Probability for traveling by bus/ ship:

From the figure, we have angle made by people traveling by bus = 36

and the angle made by people traveling by ship = 33

Hence, angle made by people travelingby bus / ship = 36 + 33 = 69

Since 120 people are spread out in the circle and covering 360

∴ number of people traveling by either bus / ship = \frac{69}{360} x 120 = \frac{69}{3} = 23

∴ the probability of people traveling by bus / ship

= \frac{number~of~people~traveling~by~bus/ship}{total~no.~of~people} =\frac{23}{120}

Therefore, the probability of people traveling by bus / ship is \frac{23}{120}.

(ii) Number of people using most favorite transport:

From the figure, we can see that car is the most favourite mode of transport

Angle made by people using car = 177

∴ number of people using car = \frac{177}{360} x 120 = \frac{177}{3} = 59

Therefore Car is the most favorite mode of transport and 59 people are used car.

(iii) (a) People using the train:

We know that, Probability of an event occurring + probability of event NOT occurring = 1

or we can say that, Probability of an event occurring = 1 –  probability of event NOT occurring

∴ Probability of using the train = 1 – probability of NOT using the train

∵ Probability of not using the train = \frac{4}{5}    (given)

∴ probability of using the train = 1 – \frac{4}{5} = \frac{1}{5}

Since total number of people = 120

∴ number of people using train = 120 x \frac{1}{5} = 24

Therefore, 24 people used train.

(iii)(b) Revenue collected by Airline:

Probability of using the aeroplane = \frac{7}{60} (given)

∵ total number of people = 120

∴ number of people using aeroplane = 120 x \frac{7}{60} = 14

Revenue collected from one person = Rs. 5,000

∴ Revenue collected from 14 persons = Rs. 5,000  x 14 = Rs. 70,000

Therefore, revenue collected by air company is Rs. 70,000.
