Q) In a TV show, a contestant opts for video call a friend life line to get an answer from three of his friends, named Amar, Akbar & Anthony. The question which he asks from one of his friends has four options. Find the probability that:
(a) Akbar is chosen for the call.
(b) Akbar couldn’t give the correct answer.

ICSE Specimen Question Paper (SQP)2025

Ans:

a) Probability of Akbar is chosen for the call:

Total number of friends = 3 ( i. e. total outcomes)

If Akbar is chosen, then favorable outcome = 1

∵ Probability = \frac{favourable~outcomes}{Total~outcomes} = \frac{1}{3}

Therefore, the probability of Akbar is chosen for the call \frac{1}{3}

(ii) Probability of Akbar gives wrong answer:

Step 1: ∵ Given that options of the answer = 4  (i.e. total outcomes)

Since only one answer is to be given, ∴ possible favorable outcomes = 1

∵ Probability of giving correct answer = Probability of choosing correct option

= \frac{favourable~outcomes}{Total~outcomes} = \frac{1}{4}

Step 2: ∴ Probability of giving incorrect answer = 1 – Probability of giving correct answer

= 1 – \frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{4}

Therefore, the probability of Akbar giving incorrect answer is \frac{3}{4}
