Q) A solid iron pole consists of a solid cylinder of height 200 cm and base diameter 28 cm, which is surmounted by another cylinder of height 50 cm and radius 7 cm. Find the mass of the pole, given that 1 cm3 of iron has approximately 8 g mass.

Ans:

For better understanding, let’s draw a diagram for the given question:

A solid iron pole consists of a solid cylinder of height 200 cm

We are given the following:

Height of large cylinder, HL = 200 cm

Diameter of large cylinder, DL = 28 cm

∴ Radius of large cylinder, RL = \frac{28}{2} = 14 cm

Height of small cylinder, HS = 50 cm

Radius of small cylinder, RS = 7 cm

Volume of the Pole = Volume of large cylinder + volume of small Cylinder

= π RL2 HL + π RS2 HS

= π (14)2 (200) + π (7)2(50)

= 39200 π + 2450 π

= 41650 π

= 41650 x \frac{22}{7} = 5950 x 22 = 130900 cm3

Since, it is given that mass of 1 cm3 of iron = 8 gm

∴ mass of 130900 cm3 of iron = 8 x 130900 gm

= \frac{1047200}{1000} = 1047.2 Kg

Therefore, the mass of the iron pole is 1047.2 Kg
