Now, first term of the AP, a₁ = – 5 (by observation)

Further we can see that a₂ = – 1 and a₃ = 3

Common difference is the difference between any two consecutive terms, hence:

d = a₂ – a₁ = (- 1) – (- 5) = -1 + 5 = 4

or d = a₃ – a₂ = (3) – (- 1) = 3 + 1 = 4

Therefore, in the given AP, the first term is – 5 and common difference is 4.
