Q) One card is drawn at random from a well shuffled deck of 52 cards. Find the probability that the card drawn
(i) is queen of hearts
(ii) is not a jack.

Ans:

(i) probability to get queen of hearts

Since there is only one Queen of hearts in a deck of 52 cards

∴ Number of favorable chances to get Queen of hearts = 1

Total Number of chances = all cards in the deck = 52

We know that the probability of drawing a card:

= \frac{favorable~chances}{total~chances}

= \frac{1}{52}

Therefore, Probability of getting a queen of hearts = \frac{1}{52}

(ii) Probability to get a non – jack:

Since there are 4 jacks in a deck of 52 cards,

∴ Probability of getting a Jack = \frac{4}{52} = \frac{1}{13}

Now Probability of NOT getting a Jack = 1 – Probability of getting a Jack

= 1 – \frac{1}{13}

= \frac{12}{13}

Therefore, Probability of not getting a Jack = \frac{12}{13}
