Q) The minute hand of a wall clock is 18 cm long. Find the area of the face of the clock described by the minute hand in 35 minutes.

Ans:

∵ Angle subtended by minute hand in full one hour or 60 mins = 3600

∴ Angle subtended by minute hand in 35 mins = 35 x \frac {360}{60}

= 35 x 6 = 2100

Since, Area of an arc with angle θ:

A = π r 2 x \frac{\theta}{360}

here, r = 18 cm, θ = 210

∴ A = \frac{22}{7} x (18)2 x \frac{210}{360}

= 594 cm2

Hence, the area covered by minute hand in 35 minutes is 594 cm2.
